Winter Session LIVE: Congress walks out over Gandhi family security

Parliament likely to debate economic slowdown, air pollution in vast parts of the country, the situation in Kashmir and other issues.

Parliament’s Winter Session continues after the first sitting on Monday was marked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaking in the Rajya Sabha to mark the 250th session of the House.

Oppositions members in both Houses are protesting on a range of issues, trying to pin down the government on the economy, air pollution in vast parts of the country, the situation in Kashmir and student protests at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Congress walks out

Congress members walk out of Lok Sabha session, protesting the government’s decision to remove SPG protection for the Gandhi family. The security for the family of Rajiv Gandhi, the former prime minister who was assassinated, was taken over by the CRPF, another paramilitary force, on November 11. SPG, another paramilitary, is drawn up to guard the prime minister, formers premiers and their families.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla says he will take action against members protesting in the Well, the space near his chair considered out of bounds. Birla spoke out after 20 Congress members trooped into the Well and shouted slogans against the government.

1,800 cases filed by homebuyers pending before NCLT

Homebuyers have filed more than 1,800 cases against builders under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) since June 2018, the government told Lok Sabha on Monday. The cases are pending before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), said Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Anurag Singh Thakur citing data till September 30.

Parliament gets data on women's workforce

The number of women engaged in India’s labour force is steadily declining, the government has told Parliament. The estimated female labour force participation for women aged 15 years and above in the country during 2004-05 was 42.7 per cent. The number is now 23.3 per cent, according to the latest survey.

Controversial Bill defining Indian citizenship

Parliament will in this session take up the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, which is aimed at helping Hindus and members of other non-Muslim minority communities in neighbouring Muslim countries to move to India. The government may bring changes in the bill, which lapsed following the dissolution of the last Lok Sabha, by incorporating new provisions, including defining the term illegal immigrants.

“In the recent past, we have seen instances of misuse of the Money Bill provision by the Executive, leading to bypassing the Rajya Sabha on crucial legislations of importance, without any deliberation," he said in the Upper House.
