In the 17 months he has been the Reserve Bank of India governor, Raghuram Rajan has tried not to confine himself to the narrow definition of a typical central banker.

The former International Monetary Fund chief economist, credited with predicting the global financial crisis, is an academician at heart but switches roles with ease when the need arises.
