A one-day strike called by traders and lawyers against the Local Body Tax (LBT) got a 50 per cent response, the police said today.
Traders' organisations, however, claimed that the strike is successful and received tremendous response. The government of Maharashtra abolished the municipal corporation tax and implemented LBT in local bodies from today.
Many traders' organisations have opposed the LBT structure, claiming that there is no need to levy this tax, when the value added tax (VAT) already exists and the proposed general sales tax (GST) will cover all local levies.
In the Nagpur corporation area, there are 39 posts for collecting tax from traders. Around 500 staff members have been shifted to another work and all tax collection centres were closed last night.
