Government has identified 1.36 crore non-filers with potential tax liability under the Non-Filers Monitoring System (NMS), Parliament was informed today.

Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said about 1.36 crore non-filers with potential tax liability have been identified under NMS.

Total number of taxpayers of income tax in the country for the financial year 2015-16 is 5,24,38,971, he said in a written reply.

The Income Tax department has implemented the NMS, which analyses and assimilates all in-house information as well as transactional data received from third parties.

Replying to a separate query, Gangwar said the revenue department has decided to write letters to 2,59,260 tax payers whose appeals were pending as on February 29, 2016, for settling their tax related disputes.

"As on June 30, 2016, 42 declarations are reported to have been received, which are under processing," he said.

Asked whether the government has noted that some companies are involved in some foreign exchange frauds recently, the Minister replied in affirmation.

He however did not disclose names of companies.
