Assam will soon set up model schools on the lines of Navodaya Vidyalaya in selected places initially for the poor and unprivileged students belonging to backward communities, said Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

"Residential facilities will also be provided in these schools and to make this happen is not a big thing," said Gogoi.

On a larger scale, the Assam government has plans to set up 81 model schools and 18 model colleges in the state, primarily to discourage students from moving outside Assam for better education. To begin with, Gogoi said the first set of model schools would come up in the interior and backward areas of the state.

Gogoi said the government was contemplating setting up of an Education Council comprising educationists, experts and officials for a comprehensive policy on improving the education scenario through new initiatives.

"Our aim is to provide the best of education to our children who are our greatest assets and the future of our country," he added.

The chief minister also said the Assam government had initiated steps to augment the Mid-Day Meal Scheme. "We will add nutritious supplement to the meal and for that steps have been taken up," he added.
