The CPI today welcomed Mamata Banerjee Government's decision to return land to unwilling farmers in Singur and said it was improper for the CPI(M) to acquire farmland for the Tata project.

"The decision of returning land to the unwilling farmers of Singur is good. We are always against taking agricultural land and there is no objection in returning the land," CPI General Secretary AB Bardhan said.

Criticising the CPI(M) for acquiring fertile land, Bardhan said "We had told CPI(M) why they were not exploring Purulia but they said that the Tatas want the land. I have seen many projects in the country, but none needs 1,000 acres of land."

When asked why they didn't protest against it, Bardhan said: "Our party took to the streets against SEZ and we protested as much as we could within the government."

Suporting the Posco movement in Orissa, Bardhan said "the entire project is funded by American finance companies, and the Orissa and the UPA governments are trying to repress the peaceful movement of the people."
