FinMin rejects reports about officer scuttling 2G probe

The Finance Ministry today dismissed news reports alleging that an official had asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to scuttle the ongoing investigations into 2G spectrum scam.

"It is categorically denied that any such instruction has either been given by anyone in Finance Minister's Office to the Director of Enforcement or that such instruction has been passed down by the Director of Enforcement to any officer dealing with the 2G scam," an official release said.

The denial was issued in response to a news report about a letter written by an anonymous whistle-blower from the ED to the Supreme Court. It was alleged in the letter that a Finance Ministry official had asked the ED to scuttle investigations into spectrum allocation scam.

The Finance Ministry dismissed the allegations describing them "as totally baseless without foundation".

Pointing out that investigations were being undertaken jointly by the CBI and ED under the close and regular supervision of the Supreme Court, the Ministry said, "status report are being filed in the case on regular basis before the Supreme Court, which has generally expressed satisfaction about the line and pace of the investigation."
