Prime Minister I K Gujral yesterday lauded the contribution of West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu in nation-building, and termed him a colossal personality.
Releasing a book on Basu at his official residence here, he said the veteran Communist leader had played a key role in building and strengthening the United Front and its policies. Basu played an important role as the Chief Minister as well as an astute politician, he said.
His life is a saga of sacrifice and dedication, Gujral said, adding that the nation and especially the people of Bengal should feel proud of having Basu amidst them.
The book, entitled `Boidagdha is a collection of articles on Basu by eminent political personalities including Gujral, and luminaries from different walks of life.
Compiled and edited by Shekhar Basu Roy, it contains pieces on different aspects of Basus life which were hitherto unknown.
