Trinamool Congress-controlled Kolkata Municipal Corporation today opposed imposing water tax for common citizens in metropolis a precondition set by the Asian Development Bank to the West Bengal government for loans.

"I want to reiterate that water tax will not be imposed on common citizens in the KMC area, but we will continue to realise water service charge from bulk commercial users," Mayor Sobhan Chatterjee told reporters here.

The Mayor said that KMC would install water meters in the premises of commercial consumers, including large housing complexes, offices and railway establishments.

Municipal Affairs Minister Ashok Bhattacharya had said that the state government would go ahead with installing water meters purchased by it at a cost of Rs nine crore and hand them over to the KMC for installations in all premises.

To another question, the Mayor said "we accept all ADB conditions for future loans to the KMC and will repay them."
