On the heels of India’s victory in the cricket World Cup final, the Maharashtra government today announced that it would recommend the Centre to honour star batsman Sachin Tendulkar with India’s highest civilian award — the Bharat Ratna. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan told the state assembly, amidst thunderous applause from treasury and opposition members, that Sachin during his 21-year tenure had set many records and deserved to be so honoured.

Chavan said Sachin was not only a world acclaimed player but also a fine human, known for politeness, and a hero for many players across the globe. “The government makes a recommendation to the Centre that Sachin be honoured with Bharat Ratna.

Earlier, the members in the state assembly congratulated the Indian team for its overwhelming victory in Saturday’s World Cup final against Sri Lanka. Members strongly demanded that Sachin be honoured with the Bharat Ratna.

The Shiv Sena had demanded that Sachin be so decorated way back in 2003, during the NDA regime. It was seconded by the former human resource development minister, Murli Manohar Joshi.
