The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited has said that the Kudankulam nuclear power plant is "absolutely safe even without the 17 recommendatons proposed by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board out of caution."
In its affidavit to the Supreme Court, it has said that even if a Fukushima type of incident were to occur, the plant is fully equipped with all the safety measures to withstand any such unlikely event.
It however added that seven of the 17 AERB recommendations have already been implemented and the remaining will be complied to within a time frame allowed by the AERB.
It said that the apprehensions of the petitioner were misplaced and baseless and cited various virtues of the plant, which was more advanced in technology than many of the existing plants in the world.
It pointed out that former President AP J Abdul Kalam visited the site and found that the plant was situated 1,500 km away from the epicentre and hence there "is absolutely no possibiity for any danger."
