Union human resource development minister, Kapil Sibal, laid foundation stones of permanent campuses of three National Institute of Technology (NIT) campuses in North East, one each in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram.

The permanent campus of NIT in Meghalaya will come in Sohra (also known as Cherrapunjee), in Nagaland it will be situated near Dimapur and in Mizoram the NIT campus will come up at Lengpui. Though these NITs were sanctioned couple of years back, they were lacking permanent campuses and were sharing infrastructures of other educational institutes.

“By 2020, our country is expected to represent 17 percent of the world’s working-age population . It is estimated that in 2020 the average age in India will be 29 years compared to 37 years in China and USA, 45 years in Western Europe and 48 years in Japan. Thus, 30 per cent of the world’s new work force will be from India,” said Sibal.

He said the country’s talent pool had clearly demonstrated its prowess by creating a successful IT and services industry which is the envy of the world. “While India’s outsourcing industry and technology workers have drawn the most attention, other skill pools at different stages of the skill continuum are also much in demand,” added Sibal.

He said the Centre was ready to invest “significantly” in these new NITs. The new NIT campuses, Sibal said, would be world-class and on par with other best technology institutes in the world.
