Punjab tops in power consumption: Assocham study

Punjab may be lagging behind in removing the mismatch between demand and supply of energy but the power-starved state tops at per capita power consumption of electricity in the country, an Assocham study has said.

According to the study, the per capita electricity consumption in Punjab is 1,506.3 kWh followed by Gujarat at 1,330.8 kWh.

“The annual per capita power consumption of Punjab (1506.3), Gujarat (1330.8), Haryana (1208.2) and Tamil Nadu (1079.9) were found to be on the upper side while that of Bihar (91), Assam (175.1) and UP (340.5) were on lower side,” said Chamber Secretary General DS Rawat in a press release.

Rawat further added that per capita consumption of electricity (in kWh) in states like Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Orissa , Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh has been moderate.

Besides, Himachal Pradesh is the only state with the power surplus of 3.6 per cent where as Bihar carries highest peak deficit at -33.7 per cent, followed by Maharashtra (-24.7), Jammu & Kashmir (-24.6), Punjab (-24.3), Uttarakhand (-21.1), Madhya Pradesh (-14.4) among the others.
