Buoyed by good late showers and comfortable water position in the reservoirs, sowing of rabi crops has started on a brisk note across the country.
According to the first rabi sowing estimate for the 2011-2012 season, till Friday, oilseeds had been sown in 32.75 lakh hectares, as against 32.22 lakh hectares in the corresponding period last year. Among oilseeds, farmers have so far planted mustard seeds in 28.49 lakh hectares, sunflower in 1.42 lakh hectares and groundnut in 1.05 lakh hectares, a statement from the agriculture ministry said on Friday.
