The central government is expected to place a bill in Parliament before the Budget to empower states to levy service tax on certain services. Presently, only the Centre levies service tax at the rate of five per cent.
Informing this, Ramesh Chandra, secretary of the empowered committee of state finance ministers, said two Bills would be introduced to allow states to charge service tax.
