Priyanka Gandhi's attack on BJP over its "divisive" ideology today invited sharp retort from the party, which said the mentality of Congress had become so "depraved" that it was finding fault with its family members.

The BJP was referring to Priyanka's barbs at cousin and BJP leader Varun Gandhi.

The ideology of Congress, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, was all about keeping people poor, "promoting and protecting corrupt and abusing institutions which question it".

"They question everybody. They have targeted CBI, CVC and media. Now they have found fault with their own family. Instead of blaming one and all, they should look within," he said.

Kick-starting his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi's campaign in Rae Bareli, Priyanka said there are two separate ideologies fighting this election and the other ideology (BJP) believes in dividing people.

He said people were well aware of the ideologies of the BJP and Congress. "Congress believes in looting the public money and then protection the corrupt and corruption," he said.

Even on the issues of minorities, especially Muslims, over which BJP is always targeted, Trivedi said, the "role" of Congress has been exposed by Sachar and Ranganath Mishra committees which have highlighted rampant poverty and illiteracy among them.

"Congress believes in keeping them poor, illiterate and under fear to exploit them for political gains," he said.

Trivedi downplayed prominent Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad's comments that Muslims fear Narendra Modi, saying many Muslim clerics have praised the BJP's prime ministerial candidate.
