Hours after the Samajwadi Party (SP) launched a verbal attack against the Election Commission (EC) for not revoking a prohibitory order against Azam Khan, the poll panel on Friday issued a showcause notice to party chief Mulayam Singh for allegedly coercing teachers to vote for his party.

According to the commission, Singh violated the model code of conduct, when he asked the teachers of Bulandshahr to vote for the SP in the Lok Sabha elections. The panel asked Singh to explain his remarks by April 20.
