President Pranab Mukherjee may exercise his franchise through postal ballot at South Kolkata Lok Sabha constituency where elections will be held on May 12.

Mukherjee's Press Secretary Venu Rajamony said the President will not be voting in the national capital as he is a registered voter in 160 Rashbehari, part of South Kolkata parliamentary seat.

Though Mukherjee has not yet filled the form required for the postal ballot, official sources, however, said the President was actively considering to exercise his franchise through postal ballot as he did not want to pressurise the state administration for making arrangements for his visit.

Mukherjee may become the first President to use postal ballot. The Presidents had in the past been voting either at the Rashtrapati Bhavan polling station or at Nirman Bhavan.

Mukherjee's polling station is Nikhil Bharat Bangabhasha Parishad at Lake road.

The South Kolkata will see a multi-cornered contest with Congress fielding Mala Roy and BJP nominating for state President Tathagata Roy.

Trinamool Congress has fielded the sitting MP Subrata Bakshi whereas CPI-M has nominated professor Nandini Mukherjee for the seat.

The President has also made a decision not to travel to various parts of the country during election time as this puts an extra burden on the state administration.
