“Till 3 pm today, 60.42 per cent polling was recorded across 146 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations in Andhra Pradesh where elections are being conducted,” he said, adding voters who were in queue till 5 pm would be given a chance to cast their votes even late in the evening.
Over 9.5 million voters are eligible to cast their votes to elect candidates for 3,990 wards in 146 municipalities, and 2,507 divisions in 10 municipal corporations. Close to 17,864 contestants are in the fray in the municipalities and 3,343 candidates in corporations, Reddy said.
The municipal elections, considered to be the semifinals for the upcoming general elections, began at 7 am today in both Telangana and Seemandhra regions amid tight security and some random incidents of violence.
According to the schedule, announced by the state election commission, results of the municipal elections are to be declared on April 2. However, fearing its impact on the general elections, all the political parties had urged the EC not to declare the results before May 7.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court is expected to give its orders on April 1 on a petition seeking direction to the EC not to announce the results before May 7.
