Gujarat election 2017: India Today-Axis exit poll predicts BJP majority

This exit poll sees the BJP sweeping between 99 and 113 seats and the Congress getting 68-82 seats in Gujarat Assembly polls

A countdown to the biggest political battle has begun, and must poll pundits are predicting an easy win for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat.

The second and final phase of the Gujarat polls in 93 constituencies ended on December 14 and the final results are to be announced on December 18. Earlier, the 89 seats in the the first phase had voted on December 9.

The India Today-Axis My India exit poll has predicted a comfortable victory for the BJP, with 99-113 seats. It sees the Congress getting between 68and 82 of the state's 182 seats.

If the prediction is anything to go by, it implies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's poularity has no taken no hit on account of the moves like GST and demonetisation, and the Patitar agitation in recent times. Also, it shows that the BJP is facing no anti-incumbency despite ruling Gujarat on trot for over two decades.

The campaigning for the Gujarat Assembly election 2017 earlier saw the Congress party trying to stitch together an equation of Kshatriyas, Harijan, Aadhivasi, and Muslim (KHAM) support. But that does not seem to have made any major dent in the BJP's vote share. 

Over 1,828 candidates' fate will be decided on December 18, of whom 182 are from the BJP and 176 from the Congress.
