CLP leader Siddaramaiah and Congress' Karnataka chief Dinesh Gundu Rao quit their posts on Monday after their party put up a poor show in the Assembly by-elections, throwing the state unit into a turmoil.

 

Minutes after the results of the bypolls to 15 segments, in which the BJP won the lion's share of 12, they tendered their resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi owning moral responsibility for not being able to give "satisfactory results."

 

In a huge setback, the Congress could win only two out of 15 seats whereas it had previously held 12 of them.

BJP retains majority in Karnataka Assembly after winning 6 seats

The ruling BJP on Monday retained majority in the Karnataka Assembly when it bagged six seats in the byelections in which it was also leading in an equal number in other segments where counting is underway.

 

The BJP's good show in 12 seats comes as a morale booster for the saffron party after it's setback in Maharashtra.

 

 

The Congress, which won 12 of those 15 seats in the 2018 assembly polls, was leading only in two segments -- Hunsur and Shivajinagar, while its former ally the JD(S) trailed in all the 12 seats it contested.

Karnataka bypoll results: Will give stable, pro-development govt, asserts Yediyurappa

Jubilant after the BJP's stellar performance in the byelections, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday asserted that he would give a stable and pro-development government for the next three-and-half years -- the remainder of his term.

 

"Voters have given their verdict and the results are out.

 

Now we have to focus on the development of the state.

 

I will give a good administration in the next three-and- half years with the help of our ministers and MLAs," an upbeat Chief Minister told reporters.

 

He sought the support of the opposition to complete his term unhindered.

 

The opposition was trying to create confusion among people. I appeal to them that at least from now on give us their complete support," Yediyurappa said.

"We had given assurance to all the disqualified (Congress-JDS) MLAs that they will be made ministers.

 

So there is no question of backtracking from what we promised them. We will make them ministers and give them responsibility to grow our party base in their area," he said.

Expressing joy over BJP's stellar performance in the Assembly byelections in Karnataka, the party's state chief Nalin Kumar Kateel on Monday said Congress and JD(S) have been "disqualified" in the people's court.

 

"Siddaramaiah (Congress) and H D Kumaraswamy (JDS) had created a narrative of 'disqualified MLAs' to discredit our candidates, but today the Congress and the JD(S) have been disqualified in the people's court and have given a verdict of 'Qualified' to our candidates," Kateel told reporters.

 

Kateel was happy that the party made its presence felt for the first time in Mandya district.

 

"There were some regions where we never had our presence such as KR Pet and Chikkaballapura.

 

Mandya had been the JD(S) citadel but today the BJP has won (in KR Pet in Mandya district)," he added.

BJP bags the first seat in Assembly by-elections in Karnataka

BJP candidate from Yellapur Arabail Shivaram Hebbar became the first candidate to register a victory in the bypolls to 15 assembly constituencies in Karnataka, for which the counting is underway on Monday.

 

Hebbar defeated Congress' Bhimanna Naik by a margin of over 31,000 votes, poll officials said, adding that official announcement was awaited.

 

A two-time Congress MLA from Yellapur, Hebbar was among 13 disqualified MLA whom the BJP had given ticket to contest the bypoll as party candidate.

What happened in Karnataka

Speaker Ramesh Kumar had disqualified these 17 MLAs of ruling the Congress-JD(S) coalition ahead of a trust vote in July this year.

 

The then chief minister H D Kumaraswamy had resigned after losing the trust vote, which paved the way for the BJP-led government in the state under B S Yediyurappa.

 

The disqualified MLAs then approached the apex court seeking a direction to the Election Commission to postpone the assembly by-polls for these 15 seats till the pronouncement of verdict in the matter. The court ruled that the disqualified Congress and JD(S) MLAs could contest the impending bypolls on December 5.

BJP takes early lead in Karnataka Assembly bypolls

The ruling BJP has taken an early lead in 10 out of 15 Assembly constituencies.

 

Initial trends showed the Congress and JD(S) were ahead in two seats, while independent candidate was maintaining lead in Hoskote.

 

BJP candidates who are leading are- Shivaram Hebbar (Yellapur), Anand Singh (Vijayanagara), Ramesh Jarkiholi (Gokak), B C Patil (Hirekerur), Shrimant Patil (Kagwad), K Sudhakar (Chikkaballapura), Mahesh Kumthalli (Athani), Arun Kumar Guttur (Ranebennur), Gopalaiah (Mahalakshmi Layout) and Byrathi Basavaraj (K R Puram).

 

Congress nominees H P Manjunath (Hunsur) and Rizwan Arshad (Shivajinagar) were leading; JD(S)' B L Devaraj and Javarayi Gowda were ahead in K R Pete and Yeshwanthpura respectively.
