Former Cuban President Fidel Castro dies at 90

The iconic leader of the Communist revolution had ruled Cuba for almost half a century

Cuban revolutionary leader and former president Fidel Castro died in Havana on Friday.

Fidel's  brother President Raul Castro made the announcement on national television.

"The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this (Friday) evening," the president announced on national television. 
 
He was 90-year-old.

He governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 then as president  from 1976 to 2008.

He stepped down to pave way for his brother Raul Castro.
