The benchmark Sensex dropped 221 points to close at a one-week low of 29,706.61, while the Nifty ended below the 9,200-mark on Friday after the US air strikes on Syria roiled global markets.

The US launched a massive strike on a Syrian air base in retaliation to a chemical attack on civilians, stoking fears of a geopolitical flare-up.

Russia demanded an emergency meeting after denouncing the attack as an “aggression against a sovereign state”. Oil prices hovered near one-month highs though prices pared some gains as there seemed no immediate threat to supplies.

Also, demand for safe-haven assets such as gold remained intact.
