Pakistan today cautioned Karachi-based foreign diplomats, asking them to be vigilant in view of the sensitive security situation in the nation's financial hub, a media report said.

A memo from Pakistan's Foreign Office (FO) has been sent to consulate generals and representatives of several countries who are based in the city, requesting them to restrict movements and unnecessary travel, the Dawn reported.

The FO sent the memo after consulting with the interior ministry and law enforcement agencies, which also said that foreign ministry and the law enforcement agencies may come under terrorist attacks.

The memo has been shared with police personnel and security agencies in Karachi.

The diplomats have also been advised to stay in contact with the city police regarding their movement in certain areas so that adequate security can be provided to them.

In 2011, a Saudi diplomat was killed while on his way to his consulate in Karachi.

In 2012, the interior ministry had also issued a warning to provincial governments of possible attacks on US consulates in Karachi over public anger regarding an anti-Islam film.
