US death toll overtakes Italy’s as Midwest braces: Coronavirus-related deaths in the US eclipsed those in Italy, which had the highest fatality until recently, and surpassed the 20,000 mark, as Chicago and other cities across the US Midwest braced for a potential surge in victims and moved to snuff out smouldering hotspots of contagion before they would erupt.
