Approximately 1,600 students graduating from various academic programmes (B.Tech, Dual Degree, M.Tech., M.Sc., M.Design, M.Phil. and PhD) had registered for placements this year. This includes a number of students who will be opting for higher studies or may have other plans like setting up their own enterprises, joining a family business and thus may not actively participate in the programme.
The process started in August 2013 when companies began visiting the campus for pre-placement talks and to familiarise students with their organisation and work profile. Simultaneously, the final-year students were given opportunities to hone up their soft and technical skills through various training programmes and workshops.
The Day 1 saw 37 firms made job offers to 182 students. Last year, 35 companies had recruited 173 students on Day 1.
Several interesting trends were observed during the first phase of placements this year. Students continued to show inclination towards the technical sector with larger number of them wanting to opt for engineering and technology firms, including information technology. In management consulting, financial services and analytics sectors, more than 70 offers were extended by over 20 management consulting firms, over 70 offers by 17 financial services firms and over 80 offers by 25 analytics firms; opportunities in research & development (R&D) have been steadily growing for the past few years. This year, too, IIT-Bombay saw some premier job offers in this sector.
There is an increase in the number of international companies coming to IIT-Bombay. Over 100 students have been recruited by multinational companies for their global requirement. Reputed organisations from Europe, Japan, Korea, Middle East, Singapore, Taiwan and USA visited the IIT this year. A significant number of such companies include regular recruiters as well as last year recruiters, that decided to come back to IIT-Bombay for the high quality manpower. Many new international companies also came down to the campus this year.
In totality, the initial part of the placement season saw variety of firms from sectors like engineering, technology, IT/software/hardware, consulting, R&D, analytics, finance, FMCG, services etc., coming to the campus. During phase-2 also, many companies from diverse sectors are expected to recruit from IIT Bombay.
