The year 2022 has turned out to be a roller-coaster ride for equity investors. Of the 181 trading sessions, the year-to-date (YTD) returns for the Nifty50 Index has been positive only on 67 occasions, or 37 per cent of the time.
The 2022 returns for the Nifty Midcap 100 Index have remained in the positive territory only during 57 trading sessions, or 31 per cent of the time.
They are even worse for investors preferring small-caps. The YTD returns have flashed green on less than 10 per cent of the trading sessions this year. The Nifty Smallcap 100 Index is currently down 15 per cent YTD.
While the maximum YTD upside generated by all the three indices has been less than 7 per cent, the downside has proved to be quite steep.
Experts say the returns scorecard for this year could get worse as Friday’s sell-off could extend, given the turmoil caused by tighter monetary stance taken by the US Federal Reserve and a surging dollar.
