Among the sectoral indices, the BSE Capital Goods slumped 6.5% to 13,322, down 927 points, mainly on account of a steep fall in Larsen & Toubro.
Larsen & Toubro reported its first sales decline in seven years. The net profit even halved to Rs 759 crore for the three months ended December 31, 2009.
Punj Lloyd crashed 15% to Rs 186 and Jyoti Structure tumbled 12% to 172.
Suzlon Energy, Larsen & Toubro and Praj Industries dropped around 11% each to Rs 89, Rs 1,651 and Rs 107, respectively.
Alstom Projects, Bharat Bijlee, Everest Kanto, ABB, Usha Martin and Siemens declined 4-8% each.
The other prominent losers were Thermax, Crompton Greaves, BEML and Kalpataru Power down 1-4% each.
Walchand Industries, on the other hand, was the major gainer up 12% at Rs 260. Havells India and Gammon India were up 11 and 6%, respectively.
