The Centre is in process of rationalising taxes which were impeding the growth of the food processing sector. As part of this process, it has requested state governments to consider granting zero sales tax status to food processing units, particularly in the perishable sector.
Speaking at a review meeting on food parks and food processing industries with state governments and related entities, the minister of state for food processing industries, N T Shanmugam, said,
