US stocks hit session lows on Thursday as weak retail sales and job market data alongside a profit warning from energy major Chevron made a dent in investor sentiment.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 38.78 points, or 0.31%, to 12,410.67. The S&P 500 Index dropped 3.99 points, or 0.31%, to 1,288.49. The Nasdaq Composite fell 9.80 points, or 0.36%, to 2,700.96.

The S&P 500 was still near five-month highs after rising in six of the first seven sessions of the year.
