Coloured jaggery prices at Anakapalli here have shot up 18-20 per cent over the last one week in view of festivals and unexpected demand from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

While red grade jaggery increased from Rs 258 (10 kg) to Rs 305, rose and rajbhog varieties were up from Rs 267 to Rs 325, 1st grade from Rs 280 to Rs 340 and deluxe grade from Rs 287 to Rs 350. During the week, about 250,000 lumps (each lump contains 15kg) of jaggery came to the market, said Buchi Raju, jaggery trader

The demand has increased mainly due to Ugadi, the Telugu New Year, and Ramnavami. Besdies, traders witnessed demand from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh apart from the regular purchase from Orissa and Bihar merchants.

However, the market received 3.3 million lumps during this season till March, as against 3.7 million lumps in the same period last year.
