Coffee exports from India rose by nearly 56 per cent in 2010 to 2.92 lakh tonnes over the year- ago period, Coffee Board said today.
The country had exported 1.87 lakh tonnes coffee in 2009, according to the data revealed by Coffee Board.
Asia's largest coffee exporter, India, had exported 2.04 lakh tonnes coffee in 2009-10, up from 1.96 lakh tonnes in the 2008-09 fiscal.
According to Coffee Board estimates, production in India during 2010 is estimated to be 3.08 lakh tonnes from 2.89 lakh tonnes in the previous year.
Italy, Germany and Russia are India's biggest overseas coffee markets. Together, these three countries constitute over 40 per cent of India's total exports.
With the projected spurt in output, Coffee Board has been encouraging exporters to look beyond the traditional markets of Japan and the US, the world's largest consumer of the beverage.
Out of the total quantity of coffee exported in 2010, normal exports were 2.47 lakh tonnes whereas re-exports stood 45,430 tonnes.
During 2010, normal exports registered a growth of 62.5 per cent at 2.47 lakh tonnes as compared to 1.52 lakh tonnes in 2009.
At the same time, re-exports of coffee also grew by 29.33 per cent at 45,430 tonnes as against 35,127 tonnes in 2009.
