Metal stocks lift Sensex back above 12K

The Sensex today opened up 112 points and touched a high of 12,144. However the index could not hold gains and dropped to a low of 11,981.

The Sensex has recovered partially and is now up 99 points at 12,052, with the Metal index being largely responsible for the upmove.

The Metal index is now up 174 points at 7,710.

Sterlite continues to surge 5% at Rs 477. Hindalco has rallied 4.5% to Rs 65.9. Tata Motors has advanced 4% to Rs 274.

HDFC has gained 3% at Rs 1,806. Tata Steel, SBI, Reliance Communications, Larsen & Toubro, Ranbaxy and Bharti Airtel are the other gainers.

Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra and ACC have dropped over 2% each to Rs 519 and Rs 627, respectively. TCS, Infosys and Grasim have declined 1% each.

The market breadth is fairly positive. Out of 2,194 stocks traded, 1,323 have advanced and 787 have declined
