Sensex bounces back, ends up 164pts

The Sensex displayed high volatility throughout the day and finally ended with a gain of 164 points at 12,117 following a 178 points fall yesterday.

The index today opened at 12,064  - up 112 points from the previous day's close. The index was not able to hold gains and slipped to a low of 11,981. However, the index recovered and thereafter exhibited volatile movement albeit with a positive bias for rest of the day.

The BSE Metal index zoomed over 8% to 8,155. The Realty and Bankex were up nearly 2% each.

The market breadth was positive, out of 2,616 shares traded,1,696 advanced and 828 declined.

INDEX MOVERS.......

Sterlite surged around 14% to Rs 517. Hindalco gained 11% at Rs 70. Tata Steel advanced around 9% to Rs 294.

Wipro moved 6% to Rs 380. HDFC and Maruti Suzuki ended high over 3.5% at Rs 380 and Rs 893, respectively. SBI, Tata Motors and Bharti Airtel increased 3% each to Rs 1,367, Rs 272 and Rs 778, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Mahindra & Mahindra slipped around 3% to Rs 516. ACC dropped 2.5% to Rs 625.

OTHER PROMINENT GAINERS...

Bhushan Steel surged over 38% to Rs 611. Godrej Industries,Ispat Industries, JSW steel, Hindustan Zinc gained 14-19% each.

Gujrat NRE Coke, RECL, SAIL, Nagarjuna Constructions, Divis Lab, UCO Bank and Praj Industries also posted smart gains.

...AND THE LOSERS

Union Bank shed 6% to Rs 159. Koutons Retail, Ambuja Cements, Jaiprakash Corporation and Aditya Birla Nuvo shed 3-2% each.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Tata Steel topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 222.33 crore. Followed by Reliance (Rs 210.89 crore), DLF (Rs 207.33 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 182.88 crore) and ICICI Bank (Rs 175.90 crore).

Ispat Industries led the volume chart with trades of 31.93 million shares. Followed by Unitech (16.85 million), Suzlon Energy (12.18 million) and Reliance Natural Resources (11.53 million) and Gujrat NRE Coke (10.33 million).
