Sensex down 156pts; Sterlite drops 7%

The Sensex is now down 156 points at 9,046. Earlier in the day, the index opened 40 points higher at 9,242, and soon touched a high of 9,247.

Sterlite has slumped 7% to Rs 260. Mahindra & Mahindra has tumbled 5.5% to Rs 267.

Maruti has plunged 4.5% to Rs 575, and HDFC has shed 3.8% at Rs 1,388.

TCS has dropped 3% to Rs 484. Tata Motors has slipped 2.8% to Rs 132.

Wipro and Larsen & Toubro have declined 2.5% each to Rs 218 and Rs 637, respectively.

Infosys, Reliance Communications and Reliance are down around 2% each at Rs 1,255, Rs 160 and Rs 1,282, respectively.

Tata Steel and Grasim have gained 2.3% each at Rs 183 and Rs 1,315, respectively. Ranbaxy is up 1% at Rs 208.

Out of 2,457 stocks traded so far, 1,418 have declined, 941 have advanced and 98 are unchanged.
