Sensex ends flat

The Sensex has ended (provisional) at 16,204 - up 13 points. The Nifty ended (provisional) flat at 4,846.

The Sensex is now quoting at 16273, firmer by 81 points and the Nifty is at 4865, up 20 points.

After trading steadily for most of the day, the markets have succumbed to selling pressure in the afternoon session. The Sensex has shed around 150 points from the day's highs and is now quoting at 16264, firmer by 72 points and the Nifty is at 4863, up 18 points. The mid-cap and small-cap indices have turned flat.

Jaiprakash Associates has retained its position at the top of the gainers list. The stock is nearly 3% up at Rs 133. Hindalco has jumped 2.9% to Rs 154 and Infosys has strengthened by 1.7% to Rs 2574.

Among the stocks that have turned weak, Reliance Infrastructure has shed 0.8% at Rs 994, while M&M and DLF have lost 0.5% each at Rs 993 and Rs 289 respectively.

The market breadth has turned negative. Out of 2,836 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 1,118 advancing stocks as against 1,615 declines.
