Sensex extends losses; HDFC, Reliance shed 5%

The Sensex has slipped deeper into red and is now down 280 points at 8,950. Earlier in the day, the index opened 25 points lower at 9,205, slipped into red and then rebounded to touch a high of 9,341 before slipping back into red.

Jaiprakash Associates has slumped 6.8% to Rs 66. Infosys has plunged nearly 6% to Rs 1,125.

HDFC has shed 5.5% at Rs 1,425. TCS and Hindalco have dropped 5.3% each to Rs 521 and Rs 50, respectively.

Reliance has slipped 4.5% to Rs 1,107. Tata Steel, Sterlite and Reliance Infrastructure have declined around 3.5% each to Rs 181, Rs 248 and Rs 527, respectively.

SBI, HDFC Bank, ONGC and DLF are down 3% each at Rs 1,133, Rs 885, Rs 654 and Rs 207, respectively.

Tata Motors has advanced nearly 2% to Rs 154.

The market breadth is marginally positive - out of 2,045 stocks traded so far, 1,036 have advanced, 941 have declined and the rest are unchanged.
