Sensex extends losses; HDFC sheds 4%

The Sensex has extended losses and is now down 161 points at 9,041. Earlier in the day, the index opened 40 points higher at 9,242, and soon touched a high of 9,247.
Sterlite has slumped nearly 7% to Rs 260.
Mahindra & Mahindra has tumbled 6% to Rs 266. Maruti and DLF have plunged 4.5% each to Rs 575 and Rs 133, respectively.
HDFC has shed 3.8% at Rs 1,388. TCS and Tata Motors have dropped around 3.5% each to Rs 481 and Rs 130, respectively.
Infosys and Wipro have slipped 3% each to Rs 1,245 and Rs 217, respectively.
Tata Steel has advanced over 2% to Rs 183.
Out of 2,334 stocks traded so far, 1,410 have declined, 827 have advanced and 97 are unchanged.
