Sensex slips 242pts; Satyam, Jaiprakash plunge

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 106 points at 9,822. The index could barely recover a wee bit (high 9,839) before slipping deeper into red. Realty and banking stocks were the major losers today.
The Sensex tumbled to a low of 9,644, and finally ended with a loss of 242 points at 9,687.
The BSE Consumer Durables index plunged 5.8% to 1,938, and the Realty index tumbled almost 5% to 2,406. The Bankex shed 3.8% at 5,285.
The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,559 stocks traded, 1,752 declined, 725 advanced and the rest were unchanged today.
INDEX SHAKERS...
Satyam slumped 13.5% to Rs 140. Jaiprakash Associates tumbled over 10% to Rs 79.
Tata Motors plunged 7% to Rs 175. Sterlite shed 6% at Rs 264.
Mahindra & Mahindra dropped 5.3% to Rs 290, and Larsen & Toubro slipped nearly 5% to Rs 775.
DLF and ICICI Bank declined around 4.5% each to Rs 302 and Rs 427, respectively.
Hindalco and HDFC Bank were down 4% each at Rs 51 and Rs 980, respectively.
...AND THE MOVER
Reliance Communications up over 1% at Rs 216 was the sole gainer among the index stocks.
MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS
Satyam topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 214.35 crore followed by HDIL (Rs 207.30 crore), DLF (Rs 197.50 crore), Reliance (Rs 197 crore) and Educomp Solutions (Rs 149.60 crore).
Unitech led the volume chart with trades of around 3.15 crore shares followed by Suzlon (1.85 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.68 crore), Satyam (1.47 crore) and HDIL (1.37 crore).
