Sensex steady; Sterlite surges 6%

The Sensex is now up 144 points at 9,293. Earlier in the day, the index opened 77 points higher at 9,226, and thereafter touched a high of 9,338.

Sterlite has soared over 6% to Rs 284. Jaiprakash Associates has surged 5.5% to Rs 70.

DLF, Reliance Communications and Tata Steel have rallied around 5% each to Rs 140, Rs 167 and Rs 179, respectively.

Maruti and ONGC have gained 3% each at Rs 602 and Rs 669, respectively.

Tata Motors has advanced 2.3% to Rs 137. Wipro and Hindalco have moved up over 2% each to Rs 229 and Rs 46, respectively.

The market breadth is positive - out of 2,310 stocks traded so far, 1,280 have advanced, 932 have declined and 98 are unchanged.
