The Sensex is now down 219 points at 9,110.
Tata Steel has slumped 5.6% to Rs 197, and HDFC has tumbled 4.8% to Rs 1,473.
Bharti Airtel and Mahindra & Mahindra have plunged 4.5% each to Rs 617 and Rs 296, respectively.
Reliance Communications, ICICI Bank, Sterlite and Jaiprakash Associates have shed around 4% each at Rs 177, Rs 396, Rs 260 and Rs 66, respectively.
Hindalco and ACC have dropped 3.3% each to Rs 49 and Rs 485, respectively.
HDFC Bank, Maruti, Grasim and DLF have slipped around 3% each to Rs 910, Rs 561, Rs 1,208 and Rs 189, respectively.
The market breadth is fairly negative - out of 2,284 stocks traded so far, 1,336 have declined, 864 have advanced and the rest are unchanged.
