The Sensex opened 205 points higher at 10,408, touched a high of 10,438, and soon began to pare gains. The index is now up 131 points at 10,354.
Tata Steel has soared 5% to Rs 265. Jaiprakash Associates has surged 4.5% to Rs 71.
DLF has rallied over 4% to Rs 284. Sterlite, ICICI Bank and Reliance Communications have gained around 3.5% each at Rs 281, Rs 425 and Rs 240, respectively.
BHEL has moved up 3% to Rs 1,129. Tata Motors and Reliance Infrastructure have added 2.5% each to Rs 250 and Rs 493, respectively.
Larsen & Toubro, HDFC, Ranbaxy, Wipro and Satyam are up around 2% each.
Mahindra & Mahindra has slumped 6% to Rs 392. Grasim has shed 4% at Rs 1,143.
Bharti Airtel has tumbled over 3% to Rs 686. ACC has slipped nearly 2% to Rs 451, and ITC is down over 1% at Rs 163.
