The Sensex is now down 138 points at 9,064. Earlier in the day, the index opened 40 points higher at 9,242, and soon touched a high of 9,247.
Sterlite has slumped 7.5% to Rs 259.
Mahindra & Mahindra has tumbled 5% to Rs 269, and Maruti has plunged 4.5% to Rs 575.
DLF has dropped over 4% to Rs 134. TCS and Tata Motors have shed 3% each to Rs 484 and Rs 131, respectively.
HDFC, Wipro and Larsen & Toubro have slipped around 2.5% each to Rs 1,404, Rs 218 and Rs 638, respectively.
Infosys, Reliance Communications, Reliance and Bharti Airtel are down over 2% each to Rs 1,254, Rs 160, Rs 1,279 and Rs 621, respectively.
Tata Steel has gained 2% at Rs 183.
The market breadth is marginally negative - out of 2,273 stocks traded so far, 1,282 have declined, 887 have advanced and 104 are unchanged.
