Nearly 50 percent of Brits would vote to leave the European Union (EU) if a referendum was held, according to a new poll.

The study by Lansons and Cambre Associates found that nearly one in four believe that getting out of the EU would weaken the UK's economy, the Daily Star reported.

About 40 percent of Brits see themselves as European, compared to nearly 84 percent of Germans.

About a quarter of UK citizens see membership as a good thing, versus 62 percent of Poles and 55 percent of Germans.

They also felt closer to other English-speaking countries, with about 33 percent naming the US and Australia as close allies.

About 25 percent said that they thought immigration was the main drawback of membership, while 33 percent said that they disagreed with EU regulations, laws and directives, also 20 percent of UK citizens are concerned about the cost of contributing to EU institutions and subsidies.
