Rejecting the the opposition's objection to making the Aadhaar card mandatory for availing government benefits, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that the unique identification card will help to combat corruption.
"This move is aimed at eliminating middlemen, eliminating corruption, eliminating leakage. I am not able to understand how can any political party oppose this. You have seen even in the petroleum ministry about LPG : the reports suggest that more than three crore bogus people who have been receiving it now have been eliminated..money will be spent on development and welfare .I don't understand, but for politics, there is no meaning in opposing it at all," said Naidu.
"Nobody should have objection with regard to the process of linking the Aadhar seeding that is happening. Around hundred crore people have already enrolled in the Aadhar seeding scheme. I hope others will also join at the earliest. As far as the government is concerned, we want to see that the money reaches people, money reaches the poor; that is the aim of the Prime Minister of India that is why we are moving fast on this issue," he added.
Opposition members yesterday disrupted Rajya Sabha proceedings protesting against making the Aadhaar card mandatory for availing government benefits like subsidised LPG, PDS supplies and pensions.
The opposition said, poor people are not able to get the benefits from the Centre due to non-availability of the Aadhar cards.
Naidu said that the Aadhar card is not compulsory for getting central benefits under the Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme and added that it will not be made compulsory till everybody in the country is covered.
