Ukranian football club Shakhtar Donetsk's striker Luiz Adriano scored five goals to equal Barcelona's Lionel Messi's record for goals in a single Champions League match as his side thrashed Belarusian side Bate Borisov 7-0.
Shakhtar recorded their biggest win away in Champions League on a night when record 40 goals were scored. It is the most goals scored on a night in just eight matches, though 44 were plundered on one matchday in 1997 when 12 games were played.
Shakhtar equalled Marseille's win at MSK Zilina in 2010 as Adriano scored five goals, levelling Messi's record for goals in a single Champions League match, The BBC reported.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich hammered Roma 7-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring five goals inside 36 minutes. But, Shakhtar went one better by the interval to set a new record for first-half goals away from home in the Champions League.
At that stage, both sides had Liverpool's record win in the Champions League, 8-0 against Besiktas in 2007, well within their sights, but neither could manage the feat.
However, Brazilian striker Adriano's 82nd-minute penalty, his second spot-kick of the night, ensured that he moved on par with Argentina captain and forward Messi's haul for an individual, set in Barcelona's 7-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in 2012.
Adriano's brilliant display also means 65 percent of Shakhtar's goals in Champions League football have come from Brazilians. The Ukranian side moved second in Group H on five points, two behind leaders Porto who beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 in Lisbon, the report added.
