The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) recently took to the streets here to raise their voices against the rise in the price of essential commodities.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) lawmaker T N Seema led the protest at which a demand was made for retaining a statutory rationing system, rectifying drawbacks of the food security bill and bringing inflation under control.
Seema said the issue of price rise was being raised to highlight the economic agony of the masses.
Latest government data indicates that food inflation has accelerated to a three-year high of 18.18 percent in August, driving overall inflation to a higher-than-expected 6.1 percent.
The recent hike in fuel prices has also spurred a jump in the Wholesale Price Index.
The late planting and disruption of supplies of vegetables and onions due to heavy summer rains has also stoked food inflation.
Onion prices jumped 51 percent between July and August.
