With an aim to bring job seekers and employers on the same platform, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, in collaboration with the University Grant Commission (UGC), established the first Model Career Centre (MCC) at the Guru Nanak Dev University campus, Punjab.
This move comes after Guru Nanak Dev University was bestowed with the status of 'University with Potential for Excellence' in 2012.
On the same note, it is one of the few universities in North India, which has been granted MCC. Under this program, a grant of Rs. 32 Lakhs has been sanctioned to the centre. MCC has been established at the Placement Department, where several companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Capgemini, Nagarro, Computer Science Corporation (CSC), Axis Bank, Trident, Aakash Institutes conduct campus placement drives every year.
Students can register themselves on the centralised National Career Service (NCS) portal www.ncs.gov.in or by using the Toll Free No. 1800 425 1514.
The portal has district-wise lists of counsellors, skill development centres and placement agencies. The emphasis at model career centre will be on counselling of jobseekers and local service providers.
After counselling, if job seekers are found lacking in skills, they will be directed to skill development training centres. According to the government, MCC should be able to help to solve the unemployment issues of this region.
