The Pakistan Army has no connection with the general elections scheduled on July 25, said a representative of General Headquarters while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Thursday here.
According to the Duniya News, the representative stated that the army is only working to make the law and order situation in the country better as per the directions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
"We do not have a direct role in the polls. Armed forces have always provided support to civil departments," the representative said.
"Army is also performing duty at the printing press. At least 3,71,000 personnel will be deployed at the polling stations," he added.
The meeting of Senate Standing Committee was headed by Senator Rehman Malik. Nacta coordinator, Inspector Generals of all four provinces, home secretaries, federal interior secretary, defence secretary and ECP secretary were also present in the meeting.
There is widespread speculation of the army's interference in the upcoming elections.
The jailed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had also accused the army of casting a shadow over Pakistan's general election.
