All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Gopinath Das was arrested on Sunday in connection with the rape of his minor domestic help.
The Boko MLA, who was on run since last month to evade arrest, was on his way to surrender at the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup district, when police arrested him at Amingaon. He has been taken to Palasbari police station.
The 14-year old victim, hailing from Heckra Jogipara under Nagarbera police station in Kamrup district, had lodged a complaint with the Mandira outpost under Boko police station on August 29 that she was raped by the MLA inside his car in Guwahati on that day, following which an FIR under Section 343 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered against the MLA.
The case was later transferred to Boko police station.
